The 18-mile pne runs through the beautiful North York Moors National Park, between the market town of Pickering and the village of Grosmont. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is featured in many films and TV programmes. Goathland is the setting of Aidensfield in YTV's 'Heartbeat' series and more recently was transformed into 'Hogsmeade' Station in the film 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone'. The railway has also recently made appearances on TV programmes such as 'Blue Peter'. The railway passes through a variety of scenery, from wooded valley to heather-clad moorland. However in the 1950s traffic began to dwindle and in March 1965 the pne operated its last passenger service. Interest in trying to re-open the pne began in Farnet with a meeting in 1967. Through much physical work and a major fund raising scheme with help from the North Riding County Council. The pne opened to the pubpc in April 1973..... |
