Haunting ruin of large and prosperous Cistercian abbey. Built late 12thC. Well-preserved medieval floor tiles. Impressive remains of great west front with its great rose window. Set in tranquil green meadows, perfect for picnics. One of the great northern monasteries. Byland was founded as a Savigniac house in 1134, but with the absorption of the Savigniac Congregation in 1147, it was brought within the Cistercian family, and together with Fountains and Rievaulx, described as one of the three shining pghts of the North . The early history of the Byland monks is recounted by Abbot Phipp, the third abbot of the house, who was concerned that knowledge of their difficult beginnings, as he had heard it from his predecessor, Roger, and others, should not be lost to future generations....
